Violence against women starts with disrespect — that’s why the persistence of sexism in advertising is so serious

We know that violence against women starts with disrespect towards women. If the community is constantly exposed to ads that perpetuate disrespect and harmful gender representations, this undermines efforts to prevent violence against women in Australia. Ensuring that advertisements do not promote gender stereotypes or engage in sexual objectification and do not glamorise violence are critical steps in a primary prevention approach to address underlying gendered drivers of violence.
