New report draws attention to transportation issues faced by rural survivors of domestic violence
Rural residents attempting to flee gender-based violence face challenges with reliable transportation, according to a new report by the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters.
The report, called A Ride Can Save a Life: Transporting Survivors in Rural Alberta to Safety and Healing, says a lack of safe, affordable and reliable transportation is a barrier for all people attempting to flee domestic abuse, but is “especially difficult” for those in rural, remote and northern communities.
“For survivors in these communities, lack of transportation can prevent them from going to work, looking for a new job, getting their children to school, moving closer to family or support networks, or going to medical appointments for themselves and their children,” reads the report.
