New domestic violence laws bring stricter consequences for accused

While not known by the legal term as a restraining order, a peace bond is more commonly referred to by that term. Prior to April 2025 these matters could be dealt with by a Justice of the Peace. They are now mandated to be brought in front of a judge and the collateral consequences are much more restrictive than prior to April 2025. The court can now force those entering into a peace bond to follow additional restrictions such as (but not limited to):

  • Wearing an GPS monitor (ankle bracelet)
  • Attend counselling
  • Travelling restrictions
  • Provide DNA
  • Travelling restrictions
