Ford government’s report on intimate partner violence calls for change but rejects calling it an epidemic
“The report has laid out a whole bunch of work that we need to do to address intimate partner violence,” Liberal MPP Lee Fairclough (Etobicoke-Lakeshore) said Wednesday. “I’d like to see the next stage of this, which is a very clear action plan, what we’re going to deliver, and who’s going to be accountable to deliver.”
Intimate partner violence resulted in the deaths of 58 women in the province in 2023 and has been the subject of numerous studies — including a 2022 coroner’s inquest into the brutal 2015 murders of three women in a one-day killing spree by a shotgun-toting man in Renfrew County. That inquest alone resulted in 86 recommendations.
Last month, Toronto police released a decade’s worth of data that showed between 17,000 and 19,000 incidents of intimate partner violence and family violence annually.
