All 51 men charged with either raping or sexually abusing Gisèle Pelicot were found guilty last month in a trial in Avignon, France. At least 15 of those men are appealing their convictions. Pelicot’s lawyer, Stéphane Babonneau, has said that she is prepared to attend any new trials that will take place. She might not be there every day, as she was during the original trial, but she will attend court when the appeals are heard.

This high profile trial brought to the surface the attitudes towards rape and sexual abuse of women in France. It also introduced the idea of consent, which is currently absent from French law. Many are now calling for a review of French legislation.
