Back in the spring, when a private member’s bill to declare intimate partner violence an epidemic was introduced in the Ontario legislature, the government insisted that more study was needed before such a declaration could be made. The Standing Committee on Justice Policy, co-led by Jess Dixon MPP (PC) and Kristyn Wong-Tamm MPP (NDP) was tasked with undertaking that investigation. Recently the time-line for the study was drastically reduced, giving advocates, survivors and others only until February to present their expertise and insight to the committee. Dixon indicated that the rush was due to a potential spring election.
